More than 20 roads across Macleay Island are set to be upgraded in the coming months under Redland City Council’s green seal program for 2025–2026.

Mayor Jos Mitchell said the upgrades would include the application of a gravel pavement and two-coat bitumen seal to improve road conditions for island residents.

“At the completion of this project, Council will have sealed about 98 per cent of the Macleay Island roads scheduled for upgrades under the green seal program,” she said.

“This is a significant milestone towards enhancing community infrastructure across the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBIs).

“Green sealing assists in providing improved roadways for motorists and reduces the need for unsealed roads to be repaired following damage caused by heavy rain events.

“A total of 22 roads are scheduled to be upgraded in the latest round of works on Macleay Island, with the entire project being funded by Council through the 2025–2026 Budget.

“The current project is scheduled to be finalised by June 2026, weather permitting.”

Division 5 Councillor Shane Rendalls said Council’s green seal program had made a significant improvement to the way islanders travelled around their communities.

“The green seal program has been ongoing since 2014 and, since this time, Council has completed upgrades to about 74 per cent of roads across all SMBIs,” Cr Rendalls said.

“A total of $4 million was committed to the SMBI green sealing program in Council’s 2025–2026 Budget and it is pleasing to see the works on Macleay Island now coming to fruition.”

The roads scheduled for upgrades under the current round of works on Macleay Island are:
