The Redlands Coast Candle Lighting Vigil, held annually to remember those lost to domestic or family violence, is going digital this year to comply with current social distancing rules to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
Mayor Karen Williams said it was important that Redlands Coast continued the local tradition, which was held simultaneously with vigils across the State to mark the beginning of Queensland’s Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.
“Every year we gather on the first Wednesday in May to light our candles, remembering victims of domestic violence and acknowledging the terrible loss and impact felt by their families and loved ones,” Cr Williams said.

“Even though we cannot be physically together this year, we can and will continue to stand together.
“Council – along with the Red Rose Foundation and Centre for Women and Co. – will be hosting a virtual candle lighting vigil, with the video being posted on Redland City Council’s Facebook page at 5.45pm, Wednesday 6 May.
“I invite all Redlands Coast residents to join us in this solemn ceremony, wherever you are.”
Cr Williams said the digital ceremony would include presentations from Betty Taylor, CEO of the Red Rose Foundation, Centre for Women and Co.’s Stacey Ross, and the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, The Honourable Di Farmer.
“Every year in Australia more than 100 women, children and men die because of domestic and family violence,” Cr Williams said.
“And every year I talk about the scourge of domestic and family violence and the fact that our community is not immune to it.
“In fact, during the 2018-19 financial year 685 DVO applications were lodged with the Cleveland Magistrates Court, the fifteenth highest number in the state.
“This year, an already unacceptable situation has been exacerbated by the challenging times we all find ourselves in.
“With the added stressors caused across the community by the COVID-19 outbreak, many of those experiencing – or at risk of – domestic violence are locked in 24/7, without the reprieve often brought by the outlets of work and school.
“They are also out of sight from their usual support people and services.
“In pausing to reflect on the terrible and ultimate price paid by some innocent victims, we can shine a light on family and domestic violence and resolve to do what we can to help stamp it out.
“Please join me ‘virtually’ for the vigil.
“All you need is Facebook, a candle and an open heart.”
