About 60 customers in Cleveland remain without gas and hot water today due to the collapsed retaining wall at a building site at 140 Middle Street. Gas supplier APA Group and an independent engineer will be assessing the gas pipeline at the construction site today.

The gas has been isolated as a precaution until safe to resume once the pipeline is tested. A total of 16 residents from the adjoining Housing Commission units remain evacuated. The Department of Housing swung into action quickly on Saturday afternoon to assist the residents with alternate accommodation.

Principal contractor Kyronn, emergency services, Council and utility services including Energex have been working together to reduce the impact on residents. A small section of Middle Street adjacent to the site remains closed.

Council would like to thank residents for their patience throughout this incident. For gas inquiries contact the APA Group emergency hotline on 1800 427 532.

A Kyronn spokesperson said this morning:

“Kyronn has been working under direction of RPEQ Engineers with relevant stakeholders in respect of its construction site and neighbouring properties for some time. We continue to work with those stakeholders, including the Department of Housing and Public Works, the Redland City Council, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, and utility providers, in respect of the events transpiring at Middle Street Cleveland over the weekend.

We would like to thank all stakeholders in particular emergency services for their assistance and support.
We acknowledge the seriousness of the matter and the urgency of ensuring primarily public safety and secondly restoring local utilities. In that regard, local utilities were disabled over the weekend out of caution whilst stabilising works are being undertaken. We are working with the local utilities providers with a view to having those services restored as soon as practicable.

We are confident that the matter will be resolved as quickly as possible and, together with all stakeholders, we will endeavour to minimise any disruption or inconvenience to the local residents and community.”
