Queensland’s first choir for people living with dementia will launch their Sing Sing Sing Redlands series at Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) in 2024 to create memories through the power of music.

The series will start on Monday 5 February and run weekly until 25 March, delivering an uplifting and engaging experience and fostering a sense of community through shared music-making by the Sing Sing Sing choir.

Under the creative direction of Melissa Gill, Sing Sing Sing will join RPAC as a Resident Company in 2024, bringing a unique and inclusive musical experience to the heart of Redlands Coast.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the addition of Sing Sing Sing to RPAC was in line with Council’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusivity and accessibility.

“Council’s Age-Friendly Action Plan was developed to help create a community that is more inclusive of older adults, can positively influence the health, wellbeing and happiness of all residents, and create a vibrant community that promotes productivity and economic growth,” Cr Williams said.

“Bringing Sing Sing Sing to the city demonstrates how this can be achieved through the arts and music to create a joyful and enriching experience.”

Redland City Council is actively working towards becoming a dementia-friendly council, recognising the importance of supporting individuals living with dementia, and their families.

Cr Williams said that by hosting the Sing Sing Sing Redlands series, RPAC and Council were collectively contributing to the creation of an inclusive and supportive community for people living with dementia.

“We’re doing this by fostering connections, promoting wellbeing, and creating a supportive environment,” she said.

Ms Gill said the Monday morning choir sessions aimed to enhance singing skills and provide an opportunity to socialise and create music together.

“We believe everyone can sing, and we would love to hear from you if you are interested in coming along and trying us out – no previous musical experience is necessary,” she said.

Ms Gill’s own father’s diagnosis of vascular dementia and her mother’s experience as his carer inspired and motivated her to create Sing Sing Sing.
