The SES Redland Bay Depot is powering ahead thanks to a new backup generator.
Redland City Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair, Jos Mitchell, said the after-effects of last year’s ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred exposed the need for the generator.
“Following the cyclone, the Redland Bay depot experienced prolonged power outages that severely hindered operations,” the Mayor said.
“To ensure continuity of service, it was proposed that a backup generator be installed before the next severe weather event struck.”
The generator installation was a collaboration between Redland Emergency Services Volunteer Association Inc (RESVA) and Redland City Council.
It comes as the SES celebrates its 50-year milestone of operating in Queensland and the launch of a recruitment drive for new volunteers.
Redland City SES Unit will hold recruitment information nights on:
- Thursday 16 April at the SES Cleveland Depot, 47 Wellington Street, Cleveland, from 6pm (for a 6.30pm start) to 8pm
- Tuesday 21 April at the SES Cleveland Depot, 47 Wellington Street, Cleveland, from 6pm (for a 6.30pm start) to 8pm
The Mayor said Redland City SES was a highly respected unit in Queensland with members having won numerous prestigious awards.
“The unit’s success comes from having a diverse team who bring a range of skills from a range of backgrounds,” she said.
“They are always on the lookout for new volunteers who can be proactive in times of calm and prepared in the event of an emergency.”
New applications can also be lodged through the Queensland State Emergency Service website.
