The phased transformation of William Taylor Memorial Sports Field is continuing this month with the installation of new field lighting at the home base of Mooroondu Football Club.
Redland City Council is replacing the existing lighting infrastructure on the main soccer field with a modern LED system that will improve energy efficiency and enhance lighting quality for players.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said Council’s investment in the lighting was an important next step in the upgrade and transformation of the much-loved Thorneside complex.

“This is another big win for our sporting community on Redlands Coast and builds on the range of other sports infrastructure improvements being rolled out across the city,” the Mayor said.
“The upgrades will help keep the club’s electricity costs down while also ensuring the lighting quality at the ground meets competition standards.
“William Taylor Memorial Sports Field is the beating heart of the Thorneside sporting community and the ongoing improvement works will ensure it remains a valued asset for many years to come.”
Division 10 Councillor Paul Bishop is pleased Council is collaborating with the club and said the lighting upgrades would make a big difference for players.
“Many of our local sports clubs have their matches and training at night, so reliable and energy-efficient floodlights are an absolute necessity,” Cr Bishop said.
“Not only will Mooroondu Football Club see a reduction in their power costs, but there will also be significant improvements to the lighting quality when the new LED system is switched on.”
Contractors are scheduled to complete the lighting upgrade at the main soccer field over the next two months, subject to weather and other conditions on site.
The number of lighting towers will decrease from six to four as part of the works, but advanced LED technology will provide superior coverage and performance, negating the need for the extra towers.
LED lighting has a longer lifespan than the existing halogen lighting, requires less maintenance, and also offers improved energy efficiency that will assist the club with reducing its electricity bills.
