Redland Art Gallery (RAG) has acknowledged the invaluable contributions of its volunteers and their pivotal role in the gallery’s success over the past two decades.
A special celebration marking the gallery’s 20-year milestone and the role of the volunteer team was held in December 2023.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the volunteers played a significant role in shaping the gallery’s success.

“Over the past two decades, Redland Art Gallery has developed a profile within the region and public art gallery network for its quality programs and exhibitions, and strong commitment to local arts development,” Cr Williams said.
“This success would not have been possible without the ongoing support of the local arts community, artists, gallery staff and, of course, our wonderful volunteers.”
Gillian Rich has been volunteering at the gallery from the beginning.
“I volunteered when the gallery opened on 14 February 2003,” she said.
“I always enjoy all the different displays in the gallery and also meeting the people coming through.”
Syliva Heterick is another familiar face at the gallery, also involved since the gallery opened.
“It has been wonderful speaking to so many interesting people and also seeing so many great exhibitions,” she said.
“The gallery is very important for all artists to show their work. It also brings tourists who come to see particular exhibitions.”
Another of the original volunteers, Eileen Stagg, proudly summed up her experience with the statement: “In giving, you receive.”
“It brings people together, nurturing our diverse creativity,” she said.
“Travelling exhibitions also give us the wonderful opportunity of enjoying art we would never normally see.”
Volunteers are the heartbeat of RAG, contributing to the gallery’s vibrant atmosphere and fostering a sense of community engagement.
Their dedication goes beyond mere assistance, as they enhance the visitors’ experience of the exhibitions, support gallery functions, events and programs, provide local information to visitors, and contribute to various administration tasks.
Cr Williams said volunteering had a dual impact.
“Volunteering is not only valuable to the gallery; it’s also a great way for our volunteers to make new friends and stay connected with the community,” she said.
“The 20-year milestone was a testament to the commitment of RAG’s volunteers, whose passion for the arts has enriched the cultural fabric of Redlands Coast.
“As the gallery looks toward the future, the continued support of volunteers remains an integral part of its success.”
The RAG volunteer program operates on a roster basis, with most volunteers giving a few hours twice a month to support the gallery’s operations.
