Extreme weather conditions had a significant impact on Redlands Coast overnight, with families evacuated, trees down and roads closed.

Two families required SES assistance with relocation, but the majority of overnight calls to the SES were for roof tarping, with a number of ceiling collapses due to water inundation.

Widespread rain from ongoing storms overnight included 156mm reported at Alexandra Hills Weather Station.

Redland SES Unit has received more than 308 calls for assistance throughout the weather event. Impacted residents are encouraged to be patient as the volunteer teams work through about 100 outstanding requests.

Redland City Council received 95 calls overnight relating to flooding including trees down, manholes lifting and reports of road closures.

A massive tree which had fallen on Mount Cotton Road took two hours to clear.

Queensland Police Service (QPS) received eight requests for road closures overnight.

Fallen trees

Residents are urged to take care around trees which are at risk of falling due to soaked ground conditions.

For trees that have fallen and caused damage to private property (i.e. houses, structures), or for other assistance, call the SES on 132 500.

To report fallen trees or branches on roads and public spaces across the city, contact Council on 3829 3999.

Roads

Heavy rainfall has caused hazards on the city’s roads, and motorists are urged to stay out of flood waters today – if it’s flooded, forget it!

Queensland Police Service reported one abandoned vehicle in flooded water overnight.

The following local roads remain impacted or flooded:

  • Allan Day Drive, Wellington Point
  • Mary Street, Birkdale
  • Pitt and Nelson, Wellington Point
  • Collingwood Road, Birkdale
  • Avalon Road, Sheldon.

Disruptions to transport services

  • Buses – Transdev buses are operating with some disruption to services. For the latest information, please visit https://translink.com.au/
  • Trains – Trains are suspended across SEQ including the Cleveland Line. There are no buses to replace these services. For the latest information, please visit https://translink.com.au/
  • Ferries – All ferry services are operating to and from the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah). Please check with ferry providers for latest updates to scheduled services.

Flood debris

With reports of large amounts of debris, including logs, trees, concrete and metal, making its way through the river systems and into Moreton Bay, people are being asked to stay out of swollen waterways

Boat owners are urged to reconsider the need to head out into the bay at this time.

Sandbagging

Redland City Council’s sandbagging operations are open again today Monday 28 February.

Council’s sandbagging stations for the community have given out more than 8,500 bags since opening on Wednesday, and can be found at the following locations (enclosed shoes must be worn):

Park closures

Capalaba Regional Park and John Frederick’s Park in Capalaba (including greyhound track, rugby and soccer fields) are closed.

Some parks may be affected due to high tides and inundation. Be cautious when visiting our open parks as there is still debris and there may be hazards.

Please avoid using tracks and trails in Council conservation areas.

Council facilities closed

Council’s IndigiScapes Centre at Capalaba and Redland Art Gallery Capalaba and Cleveland remain closed today.

Cleveland Aquatic Centre will remain closed to allow for site clean-up, water testing and treatment of all pools.

All Redland City Libraries are open but programming has been cancelled for today, Monday. The mobile library is closed this week.

Waste removal

Council’s Recycling and Waste centres on the mainland and islands are open as usual today.

Bin collections are operating as normal where possible. However localised flooding may impact services for some properties.

Bins missed due to flooding and road closures will be collected when possible (some today).
