Dunwich fire – Update as at 3.45pm, Friday 4 September 2020

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services has advised that fire crews are finalising operations at the grass fire on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), and will monitor the area overnight.

Smoke is expected to remain visible throughout the night.

People who suffer from a respiratory condition are encouraged to close windows and doors, and keep medications close by; and motorists should drive to the conditions.

Update as at 1pm, Friday 4 September 2020

A vegetation fire has broken out just north of Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) this morning about 10am.

There is no immediate threat to life or property.

Fire crews from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation, Rural Fire Service and Redland City Council are onsite.

Aerial support will also be provided.

Nearby residents and visitors are encouraged to:

  • If you have a bushfire survival plan, refer to it now and be ready to follow it.
  • If you do not have a bushfire survival plan, or if your plan is to leave, identify where you will go if the situation changes.
  • Close windows and doors to minimise smoke exposure.
  • If you suffer from a respiratory condition, keep your medication close by or consider leaving the area.
  • Drive with caution in low visibility conditions.
  • Contact your neighbours to see if they need help preparing in case the situation changes.
  • Consider finding your essential items (for example, identification documents, prescription medication, food and water, and protective clothing such as a long-sleeved cotton shirt and trousers, and boots) in case you need to leave.
  • Consider what you would do to protect pets and livestock if needed.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Advise family and friends of your intended actions if the situation changes.
