Redland City Council has agreed to a succession strategy for its Chief Executive Officer.
It follows a decision that CEO Bill Lyon will stand down to allow a new Chief Executive Officer to be appointed.
Under the strategy, Mr Lyon will continue in the role for a short amount of time to ensure stability and an orderly transition.

Mayor Karen Williams said that while Mr Lyon had taken the decision in the best interests of the City, she was disappointed the Redlands would lose a CEO of his calibre.
“Bill’s agreement to move on has been reluctantly accepted and his acceptance of a three-month succession period following the end of his contract, to allow for a smooth transition, is much appreciated,’’ Cr Williams.
“Under Bill’s corporate leadership this Council has become arguably the best performer in South-East Queensland, with one of the strongest financial positions. He has overseen a positive change in our corporate culture and will leave this organisation in exceptionally good shape.”
“Good CEOs are hard to find and I thank him for continuing in the role in the interests of stability during the recruitment process. I would also like to personally thank him for what has been a significant contribution to this City and for his sound leadership.”
“He was recruited from outside local government and brought a fresh perspective, which has brought much benefit to the Redlands. He had to make difficult decisions which he did professionally and fearlessly. This City is the better for it.”
Mr Lyon, who took up his appointment after the 2012 Council election, said it was appropriate for him to move on now the new council had settled in.
“I thank Mayor Karen Williams for her tremendous support, but I believe it is now prudent for Council to look to a new CEO and be allowed the time to do so in an orderly fashion,’’ Mr Lyon said.
“While I do not live in the Redlands, the future of this City is close to my heart and I believe residents deserve the process of appointing a new CEO to be thorough and well considered.”

Cr Williams said that under the guidance of Mr Lyon, a former Energex executive, Redland City Council could boast successive surpluses, low debt and a more efficient organisation with further cost-saving programs well advanced.
