Redland City Mayor Karen Williams has thanked emergency services workers, SES and
all volunteers, Energex, Council staff and crews and Redland residents, for all their
efforts responding to and staying safe during the Australia Day weekend severe weather
event.
“Your efforts have helped ensure no lives were lost and there were no serious injuries in
the Redlands,” Cr Williams said.
“Over 550 call-outs have been made to Council and our crews are working hard cleaning
up roads, footpaths and parks.

“Safety should remain a priority so please continue to take care as you clean up around
your properties.
“Power has been restored to all of the Redlands except for some interruptions in Birkdale
and Ormiston, which should be restored by tonight, and individual properties that have
experienced electrical damage. If you still don’t have power, but your neighbours do,
phone Energex on 13 62 62”
The Mayor also encouraged residents to take advantage of Council’s free clean green
waste kerbside collection.
“Council is pleased to run this special service. Put clean green waste caused by the
storm out on your footpath between now and Sunday 10 February, ready for the
commencement of our latest round of pick-ups. Council will collect it as soon as
possible,” she said.
“We are recycling this storm-related material so only clean green waste can be accepted
– no furniture, concrete or timber products.”
Cr Williams stressed the importance of keeping communication lines open and urged
residents to stay updated on all the latest storm news and information through Council’s
social media channels.
“We had a great response to our regular updates on Council’s Facebook page, tweets
and website during the storm and recovery phase, so please check us out online,
especially during future emergencies,” she said.
Mayor Williams also reminded residents to be prepared for future emergencies.
“While we’ve recently experienced storms, it is also bushfire season so have a plan for
both and make sure you have an emergency kit at home containing essential items that
you may need including a first aid kit and a flashlight with extra batteries,” she said.

The State Government’s Department of Communities is holding its final assistance
meeting on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, Saturday 2 February before being
deployed to other areas of Queensland, as follows:
