Redland City Mayor Karen Williams has today announced the appointment of Andrew Chesterman as Council’s new Chief Executive Officer.

Mr Chesterman will take up the post on 18 April.

“He brings a wealth of management experience in state and local government, most recently as a senior executive and program manager within Brisbane City Council’s Natural Environment, Water and Sustainability portfolio,” Cr Williams said.

“There, he led the sustainability agenda of Australia’s largest council and earned a reputation as a motivating manager and an innovator who ‘walked the talk’. He has a track record of innovation and delivering to a high standard, making him a good fit for our organisation.”

Mr Chesterman also has previously served as Chief Executive of the Public Service Commission and Director-General of the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.

“He has extensive experience in environmental management, project delivery, asset management and collaboration with all levels of government, something Council believes will be of great benefit to the Redlands,’’ she said.

Cr Williams said Mr Chesterman was selected from more than 100 candidates following an extensive national recruitment process.

“The candidates were shortlisted by an agency and six were interviewed by a panel which included independent advisors, with the top two interviewed by all Councillors,” Cr Williams said.

“I would like to thank independent company director and advisor Phil Hennessey and recruitment executive Tim Turner, who joined Deputy Mayor Wendy Boglary, Council’s Head of Human Resources Amanda Daly and myself on the recruitment panel. I also would like to thank Councillors for their involvement in the recruitment process.’’

Cr Williams said outgoing CEO Bill Lyon had agreed to continue in the role until Mr Chesterman’s arrival.

“I would like to express my gratitude to Bill for agreeing to extend his tenure until Andrew arrives to guarantee a seamless transition for the organisation,” Cr Williams said.

“Bill will leave a fine legacy in the Redlands for which he rightly deserves to be commended. The results of the past four years speak for themselves. Our financial position is enviable and, under Bill’s guidance, we have cut debt and essentially kept the books balanced while maintaining a high level of service.”
