Redland City Council has received advice from the Queensland Government via the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers, regarding Councillor absences from Council meetings.
A Councillor must seek a ‘leave of absence’ from a Council meeting via a Meeting of Council, with each decision being made on a case-by-case basis by Councillors attending the meeting.
The Queensland Government has advised that, under the relevant legislation, a Councillor position becomes vacant if a Councillor is absent from two or more consecutive ordinary meetings of Council, over a period of at least two months, and has not been granted a ‘leave of absence’.
The position of Mayor has not become vacant following the resolution at the October General Meeting of Council.
The Deputy Mayor remains acting in the Mayor’s role, while the elected Mayor is absent, ensuring the Mayoral responsibilities continue to be performed.
