Two sculptural metal panels recognising the traditional identity, culture and connections of the Redlands will be unveiled in Cleveland tomorrow (Wednesday), the final day of National Reconciliation Week 2015.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams, who will officially unveil the Quandamooka Statement of Recognition, said the artwork represented a proud milestone in the relationship between Council and the Traditional Owners of the region.
“The Quandamooka Statement of Recognition has been installed at Council’s administration building in Cleveland as a permanent acknowledgement of the Traditional Owners of the lands, winds and waters of Quandamooka Country,” Cr Williams said.

“Designed by local artist Sandra Delaney, a Quandamooka woman from North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), the two panels tell a powerful story of the Quandamooka People’s connection to the Redlands, stretching back tens of thousands of years.”
Cr Williams said while the two panels were works of art in themselves, the true beauty lay in what they represent, specifically the legal recognition of Native Title of the Quandamooka People on 4 July 2011, almost four years ago.
“Both panels give unique insights into Quandamooka culture and heritage, as well as credence to the importance of Redland City Council and the Quandamooka People working together for the future of our region,” she said.
“Capturing the essence of our partnership in words and art, the panels were more than a year in the making and the design focuses on the foundations of respect, acknowledgement, commitment, friendship and peace.
“By installing the Statement of Recognition at the heart of our City, where much of the planning for the future of our community takes place is testament to what can be achieved in the spirit of reconciliation and respect.”
The community and media are invited to attend the unveiling of the Quandamooka Statement of Recognition, a partnership project between Redland City Council and the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC).
