Redland City Council has thrown its support behind the full delivery of an expansion of the Brisbane Metro from Brisbane CBD to Capalaba.
Brisbane Metro is a high-frequency bus rapid transit system categorised by fully electric metro vehicles and bus priority infrastructure.
Redland City Acting Mayor Julie Talty said Redlands Coast was one of the largest urban communities in south-east Queensland without access to high-frequency public transport.

“The proposed Eastern Metro represents an opportunity to address this long-standing gap, providing the enabling infrastructure needed to support future population growth and unlock housing and employment opportunities,” Cr Talty said.
“It will also strengthen regional connectivity and drive economic growth across the south-east region.
“The project also supports Council’s long-term vision for Capalaba as Redland City’s Major Regional Activity Centre and principal employment, commercial and transport hub.
“The Eastern Metro should be a priority ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games as it would enhance access to key venues and precincts while delivering a lasting transport legacy beyond the Games.
“Council is committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to support the progression of the Eastern Metro expansion and calls on the Queensland and Australian Governments to commit the funding necessary to progress the project from business case to delivery.”
Council’s support for the Eastern Metro aligns with priorities and outcomes outlined within Our Future Redland City: Corporate Plan 2026–2031 and the Redlands Coast Transport Strategy.
Council’s Transport and Marine Infrastructure portfolio representative Cr Shane Rendalls said the Eastern Metro connection to Capalaba was one of four priority corridors being explored as part of an expansion of Brisbane Metro.
“Brisbane City Council is in the initial stages of a business case to identify opportunities for expansion that can be delivered in the short, medium and long term,” Cr Rendalls said.
“Redland City Council strongly supports delivery of the Eastern Metro expansion corridor as it would provide substantial benefits for both Redlands Coast and Brisbane.
“This includes improved regional accessibility, increased transport choice, stronger public transport patronage, and reduced reliance on private vehicle travel.
“The project also presents an opportunity to increase patronage and usage of the broader Brisbane Metro network, strengthening the long-term value of existing Metro infrastructure.”
Council will provide its endorsed Eastern Metro Position Paper to Brisbane City Council, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, Infrastructure Australia and other relevant stakeholders involved in the Brisbane Metro expansion project.
