Council is aware of a wastewater overflow that impacted the public amenities block at the Russell Island Ferry Terminal on Tuesday night, 9 December.

The overflow was the result of a blockage caused by objects such as wrappers, cardboard and excessive amounts of toilet paper being placed into the toilets.

The blockage was not the result of a lack of maintenance.

Council crews attended the site immediately after being alerted to the incident on Tuesday night and roped off the amenities to prevent public access.

The blockage was removed by a licensed plumber and all facilities were cleaned and disinfected, with the amenities reopened for public access on Wednesday morning.

The wastewater overflow that occurred was contained to the concrete area immediately surrounding the amenities and did not reach the gutter or stormwater inlet.

Water visible further along the pavement was clean toilet-pan water caused by toilets backing up prior to the blockage being removed from the system.

This is distinct from wastewater and is not septic discharge.

The public amenities’ septic system has been constructed with a containment system specifically designed to contain overflows during blockages.

Council reminds the community that only the three Ps – pee, poo and (toilet) paper – can be flushed down the toilet.

Other objects should be disposed of responsibly and never flushed down a toilet, as this can cause damage to essential wastewater infrastructure.

More details about sewer blockages are available on Council’s website.
