Is your family kitted out for an emergency?
Redlands Coast residents are being urged to get ready now to ensure they are as prepared as possible for this year’s bushfire and severe storm season.
Redland City Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Jos Mitchell said the annual Get Ready Queensland Week – running next week from 6 to 12 October – was a reminder that now is the time to prepare.
“Get yourself, your family and your property ready, because as we saw with Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March, being prepared was one of the most important elements that kept our community safe,” the Mayor said.
“Building our resilience against natural disasters needs to start well before an event. It needs to start now.
“Simple steps you can take include clearing debris from roofs and gutters, trimming branches that overhang dwellings and removing overgrown vegetation.
“One of the most important things to do is to prepare an emergency kit for your household.
“When you think about how Tropical Cyclone Alfred affected the city – areas were cut off, communications were down and many people were left without power for days – then the value of having an emergency kit is evident.
“Many residents used the days before the cyclone hit to gather essentials, but we don’t always get advance warning of a disaster.
“I urge you to put an emergency kit together now, or to ensure one that you may have organised before Tropical Cyclone Alfred is still fully stocked and nothing has expired.
“Let’s get ready, be prepared and be safe through the storm and bushfire season.”
