Redland City Council’s pilot Sport and Talk program was so successful in encouraging physical activity and boosting social connections within the community that it has been extended for another four weeks, starting Tuesday 2 June 2026.

Acting Mayor Julie Talty said the free pilot walking sport for older persons initiative ran from 24 April until 22 May.

“Three sports were offered through the program – basketball, softball and soccer – with participants able to take part in a modified, low-impact version of the game,” Cr Talty said.

“Council was pleased with the response, with 42 participants taking part in the four-week program across the three sports.

“Walking softball was the most popular, with more than 20 participants one week, but all sports were well attended and attracted about 15 people each session.

“Some of the participants took part in multiple sports.”

Walking football was offered through Redland City Council’s Sport and Talk program.

Cr Talty said the program was also successful in encouraging social connections and wellbeing among participants.

“Two residents who reported they felt quite isolated were able to be connected back into the community through the sport sessions,” she said.

“Even on rainy days, most participants turned up for an adapted indoor version of the game, with many mentioning they came for the social aspect as much as the sport.

“I have been told there was a lot of laughter, encouragement, clapping and cheering at every sport, and this is exactly what the program aimed to achieve.”

Walking basketball was offered through Redland City Council’s Sport and Talk program.

Sport and Recreation portfolio representative Cr Jason Colley said Sport and Talk was a great initiative, with many benefits for the community.

“Sport and Talk provides an opportunity for older residents to enjoy some of the city’s indoor and outdoor spaces while being able to access services to support health and wellbeing,” Cr Colley said.

“I am pleased Council is able to extend the program in collaboration with our sporting partners, RedCity Roar Basketball Association, Redlands Softball Association and Football Queensland.

“I encourage anyone interested in participating in the new program – whether for all four sessions in a sport or just one – to register to ensure you don’t miss out on a place.”

Details for each of the new walking sports sessions:

  • Basketball – 9.30am to 10.30am every Tuesday from 2 to 23 June at PCYC Redlands, Capalaba
  • Softball – 8am to 9am every Wednesday from 3 to 24 June at Redlands Softball Park, Ormiston
  • Soccer – 9.30am to 10.30am every Friday from 5 to 26 June at PCYC Redlands, Capalaba.
