The Capalaba Town Centre Revitalisation project has taken another step forward, with stage one construction starting on the master-planned redevelopment.

The multimillion-dollar community and commercial project is being delivered by Redland City Council in partnership with Redland Investment Corporation (RIC) and preferred development partner Shayher Group.

Stage one of construction is set to deliver a state-of-the-art Council library, Council Customer Service Centre, a community centre with contemporary arts facilities, and three levels of office space.

Acting Mayor Julie Talty said the start of construction marked the first step in delivering on the centre master plan.

“This redevelopment project is set to transform the urban heart of Capalaba, helping to unlock its full potential and delivering more opportunities for investment and jobs in our city,” she said.

“Plans for the site include not only retail, commercial and residential uses, but also community facilities and high-quality public spaces that will capitalise on the site’s central location and contribute to the local economy.

“Importantly, the new entertainment and community offerings will allow for the town centre to be activated at nighttime.

“Council understands the importance of Capalaba as the gateway to our city, and this project will deliver on a vision for a more connected, active and vibrant town centre.”

Redland City Acting Mayor Julie Talty at the sod turning ceremony for the Capalaba Town Centre Revitalisation.

Division 8 Councillor Tracey Huges said she was pleased to see the project progressing to the construction phase.

“The facilities being delivered as part of this project will ensure Capalaba remains a key economic, community and cultural destination into the future,” Cr Huges said.

“Thanks to support from Shayher Group, the project will also deliver multi-level underground car parking to support all users of the redeveloped precinct.

“This is an exciting and significant project that I’m sure will be truly appreciated by the community.”

Division 9 Councillor Jason Colley said the project would be transformative for Capalaba, bringing more employment, entertainment, and retail options closer to home for locals.

“This project will deliver exactly what Capalaba needs while also creating enhanced connections to neighbouring facilities and building on what our community already loves about this area,” he said.

“Council is excited about this project milestone, with stage one of the project to deliver a number of important community assets, including a new Council library and Customer Service Centre.”

A RIC spokesperson said the Capalaba Town Centre project was a strong example of how public-private partnerships can work to deliver outstanding infrastructure results for the Redlands community.

“Shayher Group were selected as development partner based on a proven track record of delivering high-quality, mixed-use precincts across Brisbane and nationally,” the spokesperson said.

Head of Development for Shayher, Steven Yu said the sod turning was an exciting milestone for the project, marking the commencement of construction for stage 1, which is expected to be completed by 2028.

“We’ve worked closely with RIC, community stakeholders, design partners and Council teams to ensure this precinct responds to local character while creating something truly contemporary and functional that the Redlands can be proud of.”
