All visitors to Redland City Council’s recycling and waste centres are urged to be aware of on-site safety requirements when making a ‘trip to the tip’.

Mayor Jos Mitchell said visitors should treat a trip to the tip in the same way as a trip to a construction site or workplace.

“October is National Safe Work Month and I encourage everyone to join Council in ensuring our recycling and waste centres are safe environments for both staff and members of our community,” the Mayor said.

“These sites can be very busy, with more than 408,000 visitors to the mainland centres each year, along with trucks, machinery, fellow customers and staff.

“Site staff play an important role in keeping everyone safe, traffic moving and the site operating, however there have been reports of an increase in the number of visitors disregarding safety instructions from staff.

“I urge all visitors to follow the instructions of staff and all safety messaging, be patient and avoid aggressive behaviour towards staff.”

All visitors should follow the site rules when visiting a recycling and waste centre:

  • Follow site staff instructions
  • Be respectful to staff and fellow customers – treat staff as you would wish to be treated at your workplace
  • Sort your load before you arrive
  • Stop at the gatehouse and declare all waste
  • Unload waste into the right stockpiles or bins
  • No smoking or fires
  • No scavenging and do not remove any materials from the site
  • Obey road rules, including speed limits of 20km/h within the facilities
  • Children and animals must remain in vehicles at all times.
