Redland City Council is supporting Seniors Month in October with funding for eight community-led events and a program of activities at Council venues.
Acting Mayor Julie Talty said Seniors Month provided an opportunity to recognise the significant role played by older residents within the community.
“Senior residents are at the heart of our community,” Cr Talty said.
“They volunteer, mentor, care for loved ones and contribute their knowledge and experience in countless ways.
“Seniors Month is a chance to celebrate those contributions while creating opportunities for people to connect with others and perhaps try something new.
“Council has supported eight community organisations with funding to help them deliver free events that promote health, wellbeing and social inclusion.
“This includes events on both the mainland and islands, with concerts, singalongs, an arts and craft show, high tea and aqua aerobics.
“The Seniors Month program on Redlands Coast also includes activities at Redland City Libraries, Redland Performing Arts Centre and Redland Art Gallery.
“This includes everything from health chats, author talks and brain booster activities through to ballet, music, singing and art.
“Alongside events organised by community groups, there are plenty of opportunities for residents to engage and connect with like-minded people throughout the month.”
Cr Talty said supporting initiatives for older residents was a key action in Council’s Redlands Coast Age‑friendly Action Plan 2021–2026.
“Council is committed to creating an age‑friendly community where seniors have opportunities to enjoy healthy, fulfilling lives and remain actively involved in ways that suit them,” she said.
“This commitment is demonstrated year-round through initiatives such as Tech It Easy, which provides technology support for older residents, and has been so successful it has been extended until 26 October.
“Sport and Talk is another successful council program trialled this year, encouraging physical activity through three walking sports and boosting social connections. A new six-week program of Sport and Talk will begin from 30 October.
“In the lead-up to Seniors Month, Council is also involved with a Tea and Teddies event on Russell Island, bringing senior residents and their grandchildren together for a fun school holiday experience.”
