Works have started on an upgrade of Kinross Road in Thornlands to enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and prepare the area for future housing growth.
Redland City Acting Mayor Julie Talty said she was pleased to see this important project entering the construction phase.
“These works will not only support the residents of today, but also families who move into the area as the estate continues to grow,” Cr Talty said.

“The upgrade will take in the stretch of Kinross Road between Boundary Road and East Ridge Street, supporting surrounding residents in the Kinross estate and the broader Redland City community.
“Works to be delivered under the project include three new roundabouts, a four-lane upgrade on Kinross Road at the intersection of Boundary Road, dedicated cycle lanes, LED lighting, boulevard-style landscaping, improved stormwater drainage, and fauna protection measures.”
Fully funded by the Australian Government through the Housing Support Program – Community Enabling Infrastructure Scheme, the contract has been awarded to SEE Civil, a specialist construction and engineering contractor with a strong track record in delivering complex road projects.
Cr Talty said the $35.5 million allocated to this project through the Australian Government’s Housing Support Program was the single biggest federal-level grant ever secured by Council.
“I’m pleased to see these works getting underway and look forward to the benefits this project will bring to commuters and residents,” she said.
“Work is expected to be completed in 2027, subject to weather and other conditions on site.”
Division 7 Councillor Rowanne McKenzie said that as well as supporting future housing growth in the area, the project was critical for providing better transport connections for all road users.
“We know our residents value being able to get around their communities smoothly, safely and efficiently, and that is exactly what these works are designed to achieve as the estate continues to grow,” she said.
“The improvements don’t stop at an upgrade to the intersection and the installation of roundabouts – they also include new lighting, landscaping, bus stops, cycle lanes, footpaths and fauna protection measures.
“Council has further supported growth in this area with the installation of a 1.2-kilometre gravity sewer main that will service the Kinross Road area as it evolves.”
The surrounding community will be kept informed throughout construction, with detailed traffic management plans and detours shared well in advance of any traffic changes or impacts coming into effect, helping residents, motorists and pedestrians stay safe and plan ahead.
Motorists are urged to follow all signage and slow down when approaching the works area.
