Redland City Council is launching two new volunteer programs and is inviting locals who love the outdoors to get involved and give back to their environment.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said the programs – ParkCare and TrailCare – brought together like-minded people to help care for the parks, tracks and open spaces that make Redlands Coast a great place to live.
“Whether you are a seasoned trail user, love your local park or simply want to contribute to your community, there is a place for you as a volunteer with one of these initiatives,” the Mayor said.
“Other Councils across Australia have been successfully running similar programs in their local areas for many years, and I’m sure they will be a great fit for our city too.
“Volunteering in these types of initiatives is a practical and rewarding way to get involved, meet like-minded people, and make a real difference to our local area.
“Just like Council’s long-running Bushcare volunteer program, we provide the tools, equipment, training and insurance — participants just bring their enthusiasm and willingness to help.”
Environment Portfolio representative Councillor Julie Talty said volunteers would support the care and upkeep of more than 90 kilometres of singletrack trails, more than 825 hectares of parks, and 5680 hectares of bushland.
“Whether you can volunteer regularly or just every now and then, your time and energy will help protect and preserve the places we all enjoy,” Cr Talty said.
“Volunteers will assist with tasks such as weed control, maintaining trails, clearing litter and other debris, mulching, and planting native vegetation.
“Focus areas under the ParkCare and TrailCare programs range from suburban parks and coastal parklands to high-use trails in conservation areas such as Scribbly Gums, Bayview or Eastern Escarpment.”
