The popular Redlands Coast Eco Markets will welcome spring with plenty of eco-friendly activities and stalls, along with a special focus on koala conservation.

The Saturday 6 September event, which coincides with Save the Koala Month, will include Griffith University’s Family Koala Fair alongside presentations by koala experts and a special appearance by a koala.

Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell said the focus on koalas would add to the environmental family-friendly atmosphere at the event.

“Council is involved in many koala conservation and protection programs in partnership with a range of universities, conservation groups and citizen scientists,” the Mayor said.

“This includes programs and initiatives such as Bluetooth koala tagging, sentinel sites to track koala population trends and dynamics, and habitat restoration projects.

“I am pleased that some of Council’s partner organisations will be attending the Eco Markets in September to share their expertise.

“One of these partners, Griffith University, is joining the Eco Market this year with its Family Koala Fair, which offers a range of educational, interactive and entertaining activities designed to raise awareness of koalas and their habitat.

“Market visitors will also be able to learn more about environment programs with Council’s koala conservation, wildlife and environment education teams as well as the Redlands 24-hour Wildlife Rescue Service.”

Council’s Principal Adviser – Community Education Stacey Thomson (also known as Ranger Stacey) will be emcee on the main stage, hosting two sessions of both koala trivia and ‘totally wild’ conversations with a D’Aguilar Wildlife representative and koala.

There will also be presentations by representatives from Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, University of the Sunshine Coast Detection Dogs for Conservation, RSPCA Queensland and Wildcare Australia Inc.

Division 7 Councillor Rowanne McKenzie said the Eco Markets provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the start of spring in the beautiful surrounds at IndigiScapes.

“The quarterly Eco Markets are a highlight on the Redlands Coast events calendar and, best of all, they are free to attend,” Cr McKenzie said.

“There will be a range of stallholders and exhibitors offering handcrafted local and sustainable products, food and fresh produce.

“There will also be music, flora and fauna face painting, nature craft and messy play, guided bushwalks through the IndigiScapes forest and native beehive observations and honey measuring.

“The Suitcase Rummage and Rack Sale is always popular and will be set up in the formal garden.

“The IndigiScapes native nursery, café, gift shop and Discovery Centre will also all be open.”
