Redland City Council has awarded more than $12,800 in funding to help nine local not-for-profit organisations host activities during Queensland Seniors Month in October.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said the exciting program of events included arts and crafts workshops, festivals, a high tea, wellness workshop and community concert.
“Seniors Month is a wonderful opportunity to recognise our older Redlanders and celebrate the many valuable contributions they make to our community every day,” she said.

“The events and activities Council is funding this year will help to promote positive ageing – which aligns with the Seniors Month theme of ‘Love Getting Older in Queensland’ – while also providing opportunities for our seniors to engage and connect with like-minded people.
“Many of the events have a health and wellbeing element, offering attendees opportunities to participate in activities such as guided meditation, journaling, yoga, and gentle group exercise.
“We recognise the important role these initiatives play in helping to reduce social isolation among our older residents and are glad to be providing funding support again this year.
“In doing so we are also helping to shine a spotlight on the contributions of these inspiring individuals and everything they bring to our city, whether through volunteering, working, or providing support as a grandparent or caregiver.”
The Mayor said Council was committed to ensuring senior residents across Redlands Coast had an opportunity to participate in all aspects of the community.
“The population of senior residents on Redlands Coast is increasing, making it even more important to provide this cohort with opportunities to live active, healthy and fulfilling lives locally,” she said.
“Seniors Month funding has been provided to a range of groups positioned in various areas of the city, including on the islands, to ensure people can participate in an event at a time and location that suits them.
“There will be something for everyone, from an arts and craft session with quilting, leatherwork, and parchment art, to a community concert on Macleay Island featuring local performers.
“Activities are both active and passive in nature, catering for both our energetic seniors and individuals with limited mobility.”
