Redland City Council has taken outdoor play to the next level with the delivery of upgrade and renewal projects at more than 25 local parks and open spaces in the 2024–2025 financial year.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said the upgrades were funded through Council’s annual Capital Works Program and included improvements to playgrounds, bike paths, exercise equipment and sport infrastructure.
“Council hopes these upgrades encourage more people to enjoy the city’s natural spaces, connect with other members of the community, and get involved in fun and fitness,” the Mayor said.
“Council is very pleased that as part of these upgrade projects, a number of our city’s playgrounds have been renewed with modern equipment that encourages climbing, sliding, balancing and upper body strength.
“The new features include rotating nets, double swings, wildlife-themed rockers, activity boards, spinners and hopscotch play.
“At Gandarra Street Park in Capalaba, Council has delivered basketball and pickleball courts, as well as dedicated spaces for social interaction and sensory play.
“This is the first time Council has installed a pickleball court in a local park and we expect that, given the sport’s popularity, it will be well used all year round.”
The Mayor said one of the feature projects delivered this year was an upgrade to the popular Pinklands Sporting Complex in Thornlands.
“This project has delivered much-needed improvements for the Redlands Netball Association and affiliated clubs, helping them better cater for their growing membership base,” the Mayor said.
“The works included five new netball courts, goal posts, lighting and footpath connections, and a relocated playground area with softfall, a shade sail, sandstone seating and landscaping improvements.”
Division 3 Councillor Paul Golle said the works were good news for the association as the additional hard courts and lighting upgrades had brought the facilities in line with competition requirements.

“The netball club continues to go from strength-to-strength and these new courts and other improvements will help them grow into the future,” Cr Golle said.
“Anyone who drives past Pinklands on a Saturday would know that it is one of the busiest sporting precincts in the city, catering for hundreds of players from Thornlands and beyond.
“The upgrades will ensure it remains one of the city’s premier sport venues, while also providing more space and better infrastructure for our local netballers to get active and hone their skills.”
