Australia’s prestigious portraiture art award, the Archibald Prize, is preceded by its popular Packing Room Prize.

Now, the prestigious Redland Art Awards also has its own foreshadower – the RAMP Member’s Choice Award – and just like the Packing Room Prize, it is decided at a special preview event.

The winner of the inaugural award will be selected by members of the Redland Arts Membership Program (RAMP).

Redland Art Awards is a biennial contemporary painting competition open to all Australian artists, presented by Redland Art Gallery (RAG).

This year it features five prizes, totalling more than $30,000. The primary award is $20,000 with runner-up awards of $6000 and $3000, as well as the Meredith Foxton People’s Choice Award of $1000 and the RAMP Member’s Choice Award of $500.

Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell said Council was committed to increasing its support and investment in the local arts sector.

“The $30,000 prize pool for 2024 represents a step up from 2022 and aligns it with other national prize pools,” she said.

“Redland Art Awards were established in 1981 and they attract entrants from right across the country.

“The quality of the entries are amazing and I am looking forward to see who makes the finals.”

The primary award winner’s artwork will be acquired for the Redland Art Gallery Collection for the city.

Entries are open until 8 October and will culminate in an exhibition featuring finalists’ artwork at RAG Cleveland, from Sunday 8 December 2024 to Tuesday 28 January 2025.

Winners of the primary award, runner-up awards and the member’s choice will be announced at a Redland Art Awards opening night event on Friday 6 December 2024.

At the end of the exhibition, the Meridith Foxton People’s Choice Award will be announced by its sponsors, Redland Yurara Art Society committee members.

Redland Art Gallery Manager Kerryanne Farrer said in the two years since the last awards, RAG had exhibited a varied and stunning amount of artists’ work.

“We can’t wait to cap the year off with the Redland Art Awards finalists. It promises to be a standout exhibition,” she said.

Entries close on Tuesday 8 October 2024. To enter and for more information go to: redlandartawards.com.au
