Redland City Council has allocated $8050 in funding to help six local organisations hold events during Queensland Seniors Month in October.

Mayor Karen Williams said the Seniors Month funding program supported the month’s theme of ‘social connections’ by providing opportunities for seniors to connect.

“Council developed the Redlands Coast Age-Friendly Action Plan 2021-2026 specifically to support this valued cohort of residents and to ensure people of all ages are valued and can live active fulfilling lives,” Cr Williams said.

“Seniors living in our region contribute enormously to our beautiful Redlands Coast, bringing a diverse range of experiences, lifestyles, cultures and interests to their local neighbourhoods.

“Bringing our seniors together through events such as those being held during Seniors Month helps them develop connections and friendships.

“It also has a positive impact on our community wellbeing by reducing loneliness and isolation.”

Cr Williams said this was the third year Council had provided a dedicated Seniors Month funding program.

“Council is pleased to support a range of activities through the Seniors Month funding program, with arts and craft, tea workshops, social tennis and even a teddy bears picnic,” she said.

“These events are sure to appeal to older residents across the board, from our most mobile seniors to those with limited opportunities to get out into the community and connect with others.”

Recipients of 2023 Seniors Month grants are:

  • Redland Community Centre Inc – Joy of Tea
  • Probus Association of Queensland Inc – Seniors Teddy Bears Picnic
  • Donald Simpson Community Centre – Arts and Craft Show
  • Redland Coast Art Society Inc – Seniors ARTventure
  • Blue Care – Seniors Wellness and Lifestyle Come and Try
  • Redland Bay Tennis Club – Seniors Social Tournament
