Redland City Mayor Karen Williams is urging residents – especially those along coastal areas and on the islands – to prepare and act with caution over the next 48 hours.
“While Tropical Cyclone Linda has now been downgraded to a vigorous subtropical low, the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest report still warns of gale force winds over offshore waters, with the Redlands’ highest tides of the year expected today and tomorrow.
“This is likely to produce large south easterly swells, dangerous surf, beach erosion and tidal inundation to low-lowing areas,” Cr Williams said.

“Weather is always unpredictable and we don’t yet know what this event may bring. Preparation is key in these situations so residents should take time today to ensure their homes are ready for whatever comes our way.
“People should clean up their yard, check gutters are unblocked and secure outside furniture, especially if they live in a unit.
“Island residents are particularly vulnerable to the elements so please revisit your personal emergency plan, be prepared for the possibility of wild weather and power outages and consider whether travel is necessary at this time.”
At this stage ferries are expected to run as normal but residents are encouraged to contact ferry operators or visit their website for updates.
Cr Williams said the LDCC was not activated but remained ready to respond if conditions worsen.
“Council’s self-serve sandbag facilities are open again today from 10am to 6pm at four locations and I urge those whose are concerned about possible inundation of their homes to fill and collect bags today – a maximum of 8 bags per person applies.
“Council and SES officers are available to assist if required,” Cr Williams said.

- Cleveland Showgrounds (Norm Price Park), Long Street, Cleveland
- North Stradbroke Island – Outside the Council Depot on Mitchell Crescent, Dunwich
- Macleay Island – Outside the Council Depot on Scarborough Tce
- Russell Island – Outside the Council Depot on Cambridge Road
Additional Council crews are ready to respond across the mainland and islands, should they be required.
