Redland City Council will install temporary shark warning signs at One Mile Jetty, Dunwich, North Stradbroke Island, following advice of tiger and bull sharks being sighted in the area.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said there had been shark sightings in other areas of Moreton Bay as well and that the signs weren’t designed to scare people but make them aware of recent sightings.
“We share our marine environment with a number of potentially dangerous species but, when a heightened risk has been identified, it’s best to err on the side of caution and install warning signs,” Cr Williams said.

“The safety of our residents is our paramount concern, so we are asking people to follow advice if they see a shark sighting sign.
“Council will continue to liaise with relevant agencies to determine how long the signs will remain in place at One Mile Jetty.
“Beaches will remain open at this stage but anyone using local beaches should take extra care.
“As always, we encourage people to only swim in patrolled areas and follow the advice and information provided by Surf Life Saving Queensland.”
For general shark safety, the State Government (www.qld.gov.au/emergency/safety/dangerous-marine.html) recommends people avoid swimming:
- after dusk or before dawn when sharks are most active
- alone
- with your dog
- in murky waters, estuary mouths or canals
- where fish are being cleaned.
