Approximately $550,000 is being spent to improve safety at one of the Redlands’ busiest intersections at Government and Moores Road Redland Bay.
Divisional Councillor Mark Edwards said the project had commenced recently and was expected to be completed by the end of June.
“Located near a local school and being a key transport route, this intersection is very busy with approximately 5000 vehicles a day travelling through it,” he said.
“There have also been three accidents reported at the intersection since 2006, including one that unfortunately resulted in a fatality.
“The high number of traffic means this project is important not only for the current volume of traffic but also in planning for the future growth of the Redlands.”
Cr Edwards said the project was funded through Black Spot funding and would result in a safer intersection for motorists and pedestrians.
“The project will include the existing intersection being reshaped, with dedicated vehicle and bike lanes installed to channel traffic through the intersection,” he said.
“Traffic islands will also be constructed to make it easier to turn into and out of Moores Road and lighting and signage is also being upgraded.
“Some minor traffic disruptions are expected during construction, but one lane will remain open at all times.”
