Redland City residents will enjoy a long weekend to coincide with the Brisbane exhibition holiday every year for the foreseeable future following a Redland City Council decision today (August 7).

At today’s meeting Council voted to write to the State Government to nominate the Monday of the Brisbane Ekka week holiday in August as the public holiday for the Redlands each year until Council determines otherwise.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the decision would provide some certainty for local residents moving forward.

“Each year the State Government writes to Council and asks us to nominate a date for our Brisbane Show public holiday; by nominating a desired day for future years it means residents can plan around this holiday,” she said.

“The nominated day for the public holiday is also in line with community expectation, with a 2010 survey showing residents want the public holiday on the Monday before the Ekka holiday.

“Having the public holiday on this day not only affords our residents a long weekend, it also means Brisbane residents who have a public holiday on the Wednesday of that week can come out and enjoy the best of the Redlands on that day, knowing our shops, restaurants and tourism providers will be open for business.”
