Thursday 9 January 2014 as at 10.30am

Fire crews overnight monitored fires burning in inaccessible country and strengthened containment lines in the vicinity of Brown Lake, North Stradbroke Island. They also monitored for any breakouts in the area.

Rain overnight was not enough to extinguish the fire but cooler weather today will help firefighters.

Water bombing commenced again this morning at the southern end of the island to help ease the fires.

The fire is not threatening any properties but is causing a large smoke haze towards the Southern Moreton Bay islands.

Residents are advised to keep their doors and windows closed, and if they suffer from respiratory conditions, to keep medication close by.

Motorists in the area are advised to drive with caution and check with Council and Queensland Police Service as there is restricted access to some roads and camp grounds on the island.

Road closures are still in place along Alfred Martin Way (also known as Tazi Rd), although access to the golf course is still permitted

Brown Lake, Blue Lake and Key Holes also remain closed.

Tree removal will be occurring along East Coast road today, with traffic management from the Queensland Police Service.

Visitors are encouraged to check with their accommodation provider before travelling to the island. Those planning to camp at Main Beach should contact Straddie Camping on (07) 3409 9668, via email on [email protected] or visit the Straddie Camping Facebook page for specific information.
