The next stage of Redland City Council’s Green Seal program for the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI) is now underway on Russell Island.

Mayor Jos Mitchell said Council was upgrading five roads on Russell Island with the installation of a gravel pavement and two-coat bitumen seal.

“The current work on Russell Island has been funded by Council, with $4 million allocated for the Green Seal program in the 2025-26 Budget,” she said.

“In total, the Budget included a $6.95 million investment in infrastructure for our islands.

“Council is committed to improving infrastructure on the islands and enhancing them as a place to live and visit.”

Division 5 Councillor Shane Rendalls said when the latest Russell Island works were completed it would be a milestone for the SMBI Green Seal program.

“At that point, Council will have sealed about 74 per cent of the total SMBI roads scheduled for upgrade under the program,” he said.

“The green sealing reduces the ongoing maintenance of unsealed roads which degrade very quickly after bad weather and also generate a lot of dust.”

As part of 2025-26 Green Seal program, the following five Russell Island roads will be sealed by the end of June 2026:

  • Pharlap Street (full length)
  • Baguette Street (from Pharlap Street to No.32)
  • Tails Street (from Pharlap Street to No.32)
  • Todman Street (from Pharlap Street to No. 32)
  • Tulloch Street (from Pharlap Street to No.34)

Under the Green Seal program, work will occur on Macleay Island later in the 2025-26 financial year.
