Play equipment at Thornlands Community Park will remain closed during the Christmas school holidays after being damaged by fire earlier this year.

A plastic slide, climbing play equipment, shade sail and rubber soft fall were vandalised in September and need to be replaced.

Contractors engaged by Council to undertake repairs estimate works will be completed by the end of March 2024, pending site conditions and weather.

The delay in progressing the works is due to the long lead time for the delivery of the replacement equipment.

The cost of repairs has been estimated at $400,000, which includes the purchase and installation of equipment and associated work such as temporary fencing and traffic control.

Redland City Council signage and temporary fencing will remain in place around the damaged equipment until repairs are completed.

Other areas of the park – including the kick-about open space, fitness equipment, public toilets and barbecue – are open for use as normal throughout the holidays.

Nearby community parks available for residents to enjoy over the holidays include William Stewart Park, Thornlands or Cascades Park, Victoria Point.

Residents should report vandalism to Queensland Police and inform Council of damage to Council-owned facilities on 3829 8999.
