Australia Day 2023 was an extra cause for celebration for 134 new Aussies when Redlands Coast residents from 30 countries made a pledge to become Australian citizens.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the new citizens were welcomed at a ceremony on Thursday 26 January at Redland Performing Arts Centre, Cleveland.

“We are honoured to welcome new citizens from nations as diverse as Belarus, Colombia, Azerbaijan, Nepal and Sweden to our wonderful community,” she said.

Redland City Council hosted a citizenship ceremony on Australia Day.

“Citizenship ceremonies have been held in Australia for more than 70 years, and more than 5.7 million people from diverse backgrounds have pledged their commitment to Australian values, including many on our own beautiful Redlands Coast.

“Our local communities are home to large numbers of people who were either born overseas or have a parent who was born overseas.

“We are delighted that many migrant families have settled here, and we are proud of that history, as shown by a variety of migrant family names celebrated on road and street signs.

“Redlands Coast offers opportunities to learn in outstanding educational facilities, to work close to home, to raise children in a safe environment, and for families of all backgrounds to enjoy many social activities and friendships.”

Deputy Mayor Julie Talty was the Master of Ceremonies and welcomed the new citizens and Mr Henry Pike MP delivered a message from The Honourable Andrew Giles MP, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, and Multicultural Affairs.

Redlands Coast singer Liam Waldock performed the Australian National Anthem.
