Lawn to be wild over the summer months

While you don’t often hear Steppenwolf blaring on the streets of Redlands Coast, you will be hearing an increasing volume of puttering mowers and buzzing whipper snippers.

This year’s current hot and humid weather is making the grass grow faster than ever.

With thickets thickening and tussocks toughening, spare a thought for Redland City Council’s works crews who have more than 19,000 ha of public space to mow and maintain. If you want perspective, Moreton Island is 18,600 ha.

They also mow and slash close to 500 ha of vegetated areas including roadside, turf, firebreaks and sports fields every week – which equates to more than 290 cricket fields.

Council crews will be out whipper snipping during the busy summer season.

Residents are encouraged to be patient during this busier than normal time of the year as crews plough through their schedules and attend to customer requests.

You may also notice that Council’s mowing teams and whipper snipping teams operate at separate times. This is for safety reasons.

In busy times, whipper snipping and the blowing off of pathways may happen the next day.  So don’t panic. It hasn’t been missed.

If you do spot mowing and maintenance work that is urgent, you can report it to Council on 3829 8999 or lodge an online request form at Council’s official website.
