Australian Citizenship Day on 17 September 2025 was extra special on Redlands Coast, when 175 residents from 33 countries made a pledge to become citizens.
Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell reflected on the importance of Australian citizenship when welcoming the new citizens, their families and friends at a citizenship ceremony at Redland Performing Arts Centre, Cleveland.
“Australian citizenship represents a shared identity that unites us all while respecting our diversity,” the Mayor said.
“This is especially significant on Australian Citizenship Day, when we can reflect on the meaning of being an Australian citizen and the responsibilities and privileges that come with it.
“Whether we are citizens through birth or by choice, the day is an opportunity for us to take pride in our citizenship, celebrate our democratic values and think about what unites us as Australians.
“On Redlands Coast, more than 25 per cent of the city’s residents were born overseas and our Australian citizenship is the common bond that unites us all.”

Mayor Mitchell encouraged the new citizens to continue embracing their own heritage and culture.
“In doing so you are contributing to the diversity that makes Australia such a wonderful place to live, work and play,” the Mayor said.
“Australia prides itself on being one of the most successful multicultural societies in the world and Redlands Coast prides itself on being a prime example of this.”
