Month-long events program engages seniors on Redlands Coast

Seniors Month on Redlands Coast will be celebrated throughout October with a diverse program of events and activities.

Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell said the month was an opportunity to celebrate older residents and their ongoing contributions.

“Redland City Council is continuing to work with our community to ensure that ageing on Redlands Coast is a positive experience,” the Mayor said.

“Council aims to create environments that enable older adults to live active fulfilling lives and continue to participate in the community.

“Council previously adopted the Redlands Coast Age-friendly Action Plan in 2021 and I look forward to its continuation and renewal.

“Activities being held during Seniors Month provide opportunities for people to engage and connect and help to reduce social isolation that can sometimes be felt among our older residents.

“There are opportunities to participate in craft activities and author talks, focus on health and wellbeing or be entertained with music and dance.”

The Seniors Month program includes activities at Redland City Libraries, Redland Performing Arts Centre, Redland Art Gallery and Redlands IndigiScapes Centre.

Redland City Libraries

  • Feature talks – Retirement living options, Get ready with the SES, Buying and selling online for seniors
  • Movie screenings – Forrest Gump and Their Finest
  • Create and Connect workshops – still life drawing, floral gift toppers, jar grippers, gel press prints, blotted line monoprint, clay diffuser pendants, fork flowers, haunting photo embroidery
  • Author talks by Chris Hammer, Garry Disher, William McInnes and Jack Sim
  • Cricut tote bags for seniors
  • African drum, sing, dance for seniors

Redland Performing Arts Centre

  • Free U3A Seniors Celebration
  • Rick Price: The Classic Hits Show
  • John Waters – Radio Luxembourg
  • Mental Health Matters: A Community Symposium
  • Camerata: Your Eternal Memories
  • Tributes to Pink Floyd, ELO, Roy Orbison and Eagles
  • Sing Sing Sing Mental Health Week Concert featuring Queensland Ballet Performance Project Presentation
  • Waltzing the Wilarra

Redland Art Gallery

  • Exhibition Create Exchange: Wearing Country by Quandamooka artist and designer Delvene Cockatoo-Collins
  • Sew It Forward – a drop-in textile activity using natural materials, threads, yarn and pens, where participants create pieces for collaborative garment designs.
  • Gathered Threads with Magpie Dreaming: The Art of Storytelling through Yarn – a workshop series exploring thoughtful conversation as you create with upcycled textiles.
  • Island Whispers workshop – Mindfully arrange paper pieces and freely draw to create detailed floral compositions inspired by artist Sara Za Enback’s textile patterns.

Redlands IndigiScapes Centre

  • Join Ranger Stacey for a walk along Tallowwood Trail, where you will learn about the wonder of citizen science with the iNaturalist app, and spot her favourite points of interest.

Redland City Council has also allocated more than $12,800 through its Redlands Coast Seniors Month Funding Program to help nine not-for-profit community organisations deliver free activities during Queensland Seniors Month.

The activities funded are:

  • Belgravia Foundation – Lively Seniors Celebration with exercise, song and brunch at Cleveland Aquatic Centre
  • Donald Simpson Community Centre – Art and Craft Show with more than 150 creative works celebrating the talent of older artists
  • Karragarra Island Rate Payers and Residents Association – a Longevity and Aging Well event celebrating healthy aging through workshops, talks, music, dance, market stalls and food
  • Lamb Island Residents Association – a month-long celebration with free talks, arts, crafts and activities for residents, friends, and visitors
  • North Stradbroke Island Aboriginal Housing Co-op – Spring Fair and High Tea hosted by Minjerribah Day Respite Centre at Dunwich Community Hall, bringing together Elders, seniors and the community
  • Redland Coast Art Society – a guided art journaling session as well as an intergenerational art workshop bringing older and younger community members together
  • RSL of Australia (QLD Branch) Russell Island RSL Sub-Branch – Seniors Wellness Morning with health checks, morning tea, exercise and service information
  • SMBI Community Concert Band – a community concert on Macleay Island featuring performances from local groups
  • STAR Community Services – Seniors Active and Healthy Living Expo featuring gentle group exercise, guided meditation, a range of wellbeing activities, and health and lifestyle information.
