On Monday 30 June, a morning ‘Party in the Park’ will be held at Redland Showgrounds, Cleveland, to celebrate the 10th birthday of the State Library initiative First 5 Forever.

Mayor Jos Mitchell said it would be a wonderful way for young families to enjoy the start of the holidays.

“The First 5 Forever program continues to be a popular part of the activities at our Redland City Libraries with weekly Toddler Time, Baby Time and Story Time sessions,” she said.

“As well as the party in the park, there will be special events held at our mainland libraries the same week.

“These events are recommended for kids aged 0 to 8 years, so it is a great chance for some older siblings to celebrate with First 5-ers during the school holidays.”

The First 5 Forever week of celebration includes:

  • 30 June, Redland Showgrounds, 9.30am to noon: the morning will include roaming entertainers, live performance, music and dancing, face painting, exciting activities and more
  • 1 July, Cleveland Library, 9.30am to 11am: Bring your little ones along for a high-energy session filled with singing, dancing, and hands-on fun. After the musical fun, stay and explore a range of play-based activities designed to spark creativity and connection
  • 2 July, Victoria Point Library, 9.30am to 11am: You and your favourite teddy are invited to a special Teddy Bears’ Picnic at the library as part of the First 5 Forever 10-Year Celebration
  • 3 July, Capalaba Library, 9.30am to 11am: A special live retelling of the beloved Aussie classic Wombat Stew brought to life with costumes, voices, and plenty of fun.
Victoria Point Library will celebrate the First 5 Forever 10-Year Celebration with a Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

The libraries will also offer a range of other activities during the break.

Redland Art Gallery (RAG), Cleveland, also will be keeping young people busy, including partnering with Cleveland Library for Amazing Art Race.

  • 7 July, Amazing Art Race, 2pm to 4pm: Starting at Cleveland Library and finishing just across the road at RAG, participants get to create puppets, collage art, and 3D towers in this fast-paced, hands-on workshop. Suitable for ages 12 to 17 years, it is free but bookings are essential.
  • 11 July, Realise the Imaginary, 10am: This holiday workshop will allow students to turn their creative ideas into amazing artwork with pens, watercolour and pencil.
  • During opening hours: There will also be a free drop-in activity at RAG during the holidays where you can create and share arty postcards inspired by the gallery’s current exhibition Headlands Revisited. For more details, go to Redland Art Gallery.

And if that’s not enough, you can also run away to the circus for the evening with Cirque Nouvelle at Redland Performing Arts Centre on 7 July at 6pm.

Featuring acrobatics, aerials, juggling and balancing acts, plus a crazy ringmaster, this high-energy performance will be loved by the whole family.

Meanwhile, Redlands IndigiScapes Centre has a range of activities it will be hosting across the school holidays including:

  • 30 June, 10am, Geckoes Wildlife: Join Ranger Stacey and Martin Fingland from Geckoes Wildlife for this engaging and educational wildlife show.
  • 1 July, 10am, Campfire Kitchen adventures: An immersive outdoor campfire experience where kids will gather natural materials and enjoy the magic of cooking over an open fire.
  • 2 July, 9am, Mavis’s Mud Kitchen: @Curious Me will unpack Mavis, their kitchen trailer for young children to enjoy loose parts play with pots, pans, cable reels, milk crates, fizzle dust potion play and more.
  • 7 July, 9.30am, Family pop up library with Snake Boss: Join the First 5 Forever team at this engaging and educational reptile show in the gardens at IndigiScapes.
  • 8 July, 9am, ReWild Nature skills: Action packed full day of survival skills workshop for kids, such as learn how to find and purify water; light your own fire; and how to make an emergency shelter from natural materials.

All activities listed are offered at a low cost or free of charge but may require bookings prior to attendance. Please note a waiting list is current for the First 5 Forever birthday party on 30 June. For further details and booking information visit www.redland.qld.gov.au/SchoolHolidayActivities.
