The stunning natural beauty of North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) has revived its onscreen role in the Australian TV drama series Darby and Joan.

Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell said parts of the island’s Headland Foreshore and Cylinder Beach were used as filming locations in June last year for the second season of the popular series.

“The island also featured in season one, with scenes for that season filmed there in September 2021,” the Mayor said.

“Minjerribah is one of the most spectacular coastal locations in Australia and to see it feature again in Darby and Joan is an absolute delight.”

Currently streaming on Acorn TV in Australia, UK, US, Canada and New Zealand, the series follows retired Australian police officer Jack Darby (Bryan Brown) who embarks on a road trip with widowed English nurse Joan Kirkhope (Greta Scacchi).

In season two, the pair are on the road again as Jack tries, with the help of Joan, to clear his name of the unexplained cloud hanging over his career.

Executive Producer Claire Tonkin said it was a “joy” to return to Minjerribah for filming.

“We have been thrilled that audiences have embraced Darby and Joan’s series one adventures through Queensland’s spectacular sights, so it’s been a joy to return to Minjerribah for season two,” she said.

“Moving a whole TV crew on to an island is no mean feat, so our team really appreciated the welcome and support from all the folks on North Stradbroke Island.

“Watching the whales and dolphins playing off the coast while our cast and crew filmed on the pristine beaches was such a special way to start our shoot, and we can’t wait to share this experience with audiences across Australia and the world.”

Division 2 Councillor Peter Mitchell said Minjerribah’s beauty was on show to a worldwide audience thanks to Darby and Joan.

“Season two hopefully will bring another welcome boost to our local tourism industry,” he said.

Produced by Australian production company CJZ, Darby and Joan is an Acorn TV Original, supported by Screen Queensland’s Screen Finance Program.
