Redland City Council is pleased to again support Clean Up Australia Day by providing either skip bins or kerbside wheelie bins for registered clean up events.

Mayor Karen Williams encouraged Redlands Coast residents to get involved for the sake of local wildlife and waterways.

“Litter is unsightly, but it also presents a serious environmental problem,” Cr Williams said.

“In particular, when it gets into our waterways and the bay, it can be extremely harmful to wildlife –

both as a physical hazard and then when toxins are introduced into the eco cycle.”

Cr Williams said Redlands Coast residents can get involved by finding a local spot to clean up and registering an event for free, or by joining an open, registered event listed on the Clean Up Australia Day website.

Event organisers can advise if they want bins when they register, or they can contact Council on 3829 8999 or email [email protected], but bin requests must be placed by Wednesday 13 February at the latest.

“Let’s all do our part to keep our naturally wonderful Redlands Coast looking its best,” Cr Williams said.

“Let’s create a cleaner environment while better protecting our waterways and wildlife.”

Cr Williams said Council played its part with a number of initiatives, including the installation of more than 892 SQIDs (Stormwater Quality Improvement Devices) in city drains which has helped to pick up more than 500 cubic metres of waste.

“Council also carries out street sweeping in selected streets to help reduce litter in drains and waterways,” she said.

“We also increase waste collection in parks during peak periods – particularly in foreshore parks and on Minjerribah – and following a successful trial, our litter-reducing solar compacting bins are being rolled out across the city.”

Redlands Coast residents are being encouraged to register for Clean Up Australia Day 2024.

Clean up Australia Day 2024 events will be held on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 27 February: Business Clean Up day
  • Friday 1 March: School Clean Up day
  • Sunday 3 March: Community Clean Up day
