The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls are excited to announce the relocation of their Round 10 Hostplus Cup match to Ron Stark Oval on North Stradbroke Island / Minjerribah.

This will be an Indigenous recognition match, proudly supported by long-term partners Deadly Choices and Redland City Council, held on Sunday 5 June.

Seagulls staff and players will also visit the island in the days leading up to the game to hold rugby league clinics and engage in activities to help promote tourism on the Redlands Coast.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls CEO Hanan Laban said the club was proud to partner with Deadly Choices since 2014 to showcase the connection between First Nations people and the great game of rugby league.

“As a rugby league club, we wholeheartedly support maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” Mr Laban said.

“We embrace the opportunity that our platform provides us to bring people closer together and to spread positive messages throughout the community.

“Our partnership with Deadly Choices and Redland City Council allows us to form a supportive network to help people lead a healthy life.

“We’re excited for June 5 and we’d like to recognise Deadly Choices and Redland City Council, as this event would not be possible without their support.”

Mayor Karen Williams said Council was happy to support Wynnum Manly Seagulls Rugby League Club with $9000 sponsorship for the event, as it offered important social and health benefits for the Redlands Coast community.

“We know our community loves their sport, so we are proud to be bringing this match to Minjerribah,” Cr Williams said.

“The match will also boost local tourism and business by showcasing the beautiful backdrop of the island.

“In partnership with Minjerribah’s Yulu-Burri-Ba health clinic and the Deadly Choices initiative, the match will also raise awareness of Quandamooka culture and promote health care access and initiatives for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“Council is proud to support this match for the third year with $9000 through round one of the 2021-2022 sponsorship program, which includes $1500 towards Quandamooka Cultural Awareness.”

Yulu Burri Ba Health Service CEO David Collins said they were excited to return to Minjerribah this year after a game was successfully featured on the Redlands mainland for the first time last year.

“We’re excited to return to North Stradbroke Island in 2022, which will be well received by locals while providing an opportunity for Wynnum supporters more broadly to venture over to the island and enjoy a unique cultural experience.

“This game also provides an amazing opportunity for us to encourage positive health practices by incentivising health checks for supporters to receive a limited edition Deadly Choices Seagulls shirt.

“It’s a promotion that has worked extremely well for us with the ongoing support of Wynnum Seagulls, particularly in ensuring our younger people are encouraged to live healthy, deadly lives.”

Division 2 Councillor Peter Mitchell said the event was an opportunity for the community to support a good cause.

“Events such as the Hostplus Cup are an example of how community partnerships can make a positive impact on society,” Cr Mitchell said.

“Through health education programs, we can work together to achieve health equality across the community on Minjerribah.”
