Redland City Mayor Karen Williams has welcomed the release by Dame Quentin Bryce of a state-wide report into domestic and family violence.
Cr Williams, who is part of the Redlands Domestic and Family Violence Action Group, said the group had made a submission to the Not Now, Not Ever: Putting an End to Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland report to highlight the need for greater focus on domestic violence in the Redlands.
“No community is safe from the effects of domestic and family violence, with Redlands accounting for around 3 per cent of all domestic and family violence protection orders applied for across Queensland,” Cr Williams said.

“The taskforce has a vision for a Queensland that’s free from domestic and family violence, which is also a vision I passionately support as everyone should feel safe in their own homes.
“The report has three key themes – changing cultural attitudes, ensuring services work together and also looking at the role of our legal systems.
“It is encouraging to see that the recommendations in this report mirror work already being promoted in Redlands domestic and family violence initiatives and projects.
“Council recognises the importance of an integrated response that the Not Now, Not Ever report highlights and has been encouraging this collaborative approach across agencies to keeps victims safe and make perpetrators accountable.
“Council and our community partners have been strongly advocating for a comprehensive domestic and family violence response for the Redlands.
“In the last year, significant progress has been made with the announcement of a Redlands’ domestic and family violence support service last November and we eagerly await the announcement of the successful tenderer for this project.
“Community education is also key. We held a fundraising dinner last year – ‘Dîner en Rouge’ – to raise funds to help people in this situation, but also to raise awareness of this issue in our City.
“This event will be held again this year, and we will look for other ways to promote cultural change and the taskforce’s message that domestic and family violence prevention is everyone’s responsibility.”
