Redland City Council has re-opened Thompson’s Beach at Victoria Point, which had been closed since 23 February 2015 after routine monitoring showed elevated levels of enterococci bacteria.

Recent sampling has confirmed that the enterococci bacteria, which is often found in waterways, was no longer at levels that posed a risk to public health.

Council made the decision to temporarily close the beach last week after samples exceeded “Action Trigger” levels, in accordance with Healthy Waterways Healthy Waterplay guidelines.

Local Councillor for the area Cr Lance Hewlett said he was very happy to see the swimming area re-opened.

“This is a popular local beach and it’s great to see it re-opened for public use,” Cr Hewlett said.

“Council will continue routine recreational water monitoring to ensure the safety of residents.”

The cause of the elevated levels is not known with Council officers still investigating potential causes.
