Get the facts – correction on flying foxes and koalas

Council would like to set the record straight in response to two items in the Courier Mail’s Village Green section(Saturday 16 August).

The story “BATS COP IT” was inaccurate in stating that vegetation was being cleared at Capalaba to get flying foxes to ‘move on’.  This is not the case; the works involved trimming vegetation under storey to increase the buffer between the flying fox roost and nearby houses.   The work was not designed to move the bats from the wetlands, which are large and have plenty of space for the bats.

Also the vegetation cleared was not planted as part of a community project, as stated in the article.

“KOALAS OUTLOOK BLEAK” stated that the State Government and Council had approved the extension of a quarry at Mount Cotton; this is incorrect. Council refused the application to extend the quarry, which was then called in and approved by the State Government.

Redland City Council takes a proactive approach to environmental protection, including our habitat protection programs, hosting community planting events and working with local bushcare groups to protect local vegetation.
