You can discover the unique flora, fauna and fish of the Redlands’ creeks during a special Healthy Waterways celebration this month.
Connect to your Creek Week from 17-25 May gives Redlanders a chance to learn more about the wonderfully wild diversity of the City’s diverse waterways.
Redland City environment, waterways and foreshores spokesman Cr Paul Gleeson said the week boasted a range of activities to inform and engage residents.
“There are some great activities which encourage kids and families to get out and be active,’’ Cr Gleeson said.
“From helping to check water quality to guided walks and displays, you are sure to find something new and interesting. And best of all, they are mostly free with no need to book.”
On Wednesday 14 May, you can give your local creek a helping hand by joining the Creek Crew community-based water quality monitoring group from 10am–11am. Meet inside the Redlands IndigiScapes Centre at 17 Runnymede Rd, Capalaba.
“This is a great way to learn about the water quality in your creek and the impact it has on Moreton Bay while making a positive contribution,’’ Cr Gleeson said.
Youngsters will love the dragonflies and water bugs display from Saturday 17 May to Sunday 25 May at IndigiScapes Centre. It will be open from 10am-4pm daily.
Visitors can learn more about the life and habits of dragonflies from the centre’s display wall and see whether they can spot the waterbugs in their enclosure. There will be fun craft activities for kids each day.
A two-hour Eprapah Creek guided walk will head off from the Eprapah Environment Centre at 424 Cleveland Redland Bay Rd, Victoria Point, from 9am on Saturday 17 May.
Guides will take you on an exploration of the trails and natural attractions of lower Eprapah Creek, with walkers learning about the area’s unique flora and fauna. Again, there’s no need to book but a gold coin donation to local Scouts would be appreciated.
As part of Connect to your Creek Week, award-winning Redlands Kayak Tours will host guided kayak tours of the Redlands’ beautiful foreshores and creeks.
Tours will leave from Thompson Beach, Victoria Point, on Saturday 17 May (9.30am-11am and noon-1.30pm) and Sunday 18 May (10.30am-noon, 1pm-2.30pm). Cost: adults $55, children $45/child (BYO kayak or canoe – $45/adult & $35/child). Bookings required by 12 May on 1300 529 258.
