Redland City Council is helping to bring free accessible film screenings to the Redlands, with open captions and audio descriptions that cater for people with hearing and vision impairments.

Popular Australian film, The Sapphires, and a series of new Australian family-friendly short films will screen at the Redland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 15 December. With limited general, wheelchair and hearing loop seating available, it’s best to book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Accessible screening details:
When: Saturday 15 December, 2pm (short films) and 4pm (The Sapphires).
Venue: Redland Performing Arts Centre Concert Hall, Middle Street, Cleveland
To book: RPAC Box Office ph 3829 8131

Mayor Karen Williams said she was delighted that Council was partnering with a national tour of the Access All Areas Film festival to host their only Queensland community event.

“It is easy to forget the barriers that exist in every facet of life for those with a disability,” she said.

“We look forward to the day when a wider range of technologies is available so that people with a hearing or vision impairment may have access to a broader range of experiences and entertainment,” Cr Williams said.

Cr Williams stressed that this was a free event for the whole community.

“Everyone is welcome to attend and I’m looking forward to seeing many community members there.”

These film screenings are among a number of events Council has hosted in recognition of International Day of People with Disability (3 December). Other activities included workshops addressing access in the built environment.
