Redland City to come alive with NAIDOC Week celebrations

A celebration of indigenous culture will envelop the Redlands in July with plenty of events on offer.

The month will begin with NAIDOC Week from 3-10 July, which will include the Songlines in the Redlands showcase of entertainment at the Redland Performing Arts Centre on Sunday 10 July. The event will feature entertainment and events for the whole family.

An exhibition featuring the works of 15 Quandamooka artists spanning 35 years can also be viewed at the Cleveland Library until Sunday 10 July. Called Our Island, Our Story, Our Art: Quandamooka Artists from the Redland Art Gallery Collection – the exhibition features works by well-known artists including Megan Cope, Sandra Delaney, Oodgeroo Noonuccal, and Joshua Walker.

Gathering Strands is also at the Redland Art Gallery until 24 July. This multi-layered exhibition features the works of  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander weavers, fibre artists, and established and emerging visual artists from across South East Queensland.

Throughout July all the fun and entertainment of the Quandamooka Festival continues, bringing a program of culture, country and people.

Highlights for the month include:

  • What was the Rainbow? An exhibition by Greg Manning
    1 July – 30 September, North Stradbroke Island historical museum
  • Tura Yalingbila – Welcome the Whales
    Saturday 23 July 11am – 3pm, Headland Park Point Lookout (Mooloomba), North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah)
  • Boat trip on the bay: The science and culture of Quandamooka waters
    Monday 25 July
