A new campaign designed to end domestic violence was launched last Wednesday during a community vigil to remember those who have lost their lives through domestic and family violence. More than 100 people turned out to the candle-lighting at Raby Bay Harbour.
The launch was just one element of the remembrance vigil, which included candle lighting to honour and remember the victims of this all too often hidden problem.
By harnessing people power, the Redlands Working Against Violence Support Service (WAVSS) campaign focuses on the message of non-violence rather than highlighting the examples of violence.
Look out for the campaign message – Non-violence is contagious; Give it to your friends – on waste trucks, Council fleet vehicles and bus shelters. Be sure to stick the campaign’s bumper stickers on your car.
Domestic violence leave for Council employees
Redland City Council has further strengthened its support for those affected by domestic and family violence by introducing an additional 10 days paid domestic violence leave for employees.
Under its approved guideline that supports those who are experiencing abuse, Council is also providing training for officers who may be approached about this issue to ensure these situations can be dealt with in a safe and respectful way, plus advice about support services to contact and an assistance program for victims and their immediate dependants.
